Shinhan Asset Management has signed a four-party memorandum of understanding with the Solana Foundation, Etherfuse, and Orca to test a Korean won-denominated tokenized fund on Solana.
The project is still a proof of concept, but its scope is significant.
The proposed product is a tokenized money market fund backed by ultra-short-term bonds and designed for overseas institutional investors. Its structure is inspired by BlackRock’s BUIDL model, but BlackRock is not a partner in the project.
The trial will examine the complete process:
- Issuance and investor distribution
- KYC and anti-money laundering procedures
- Foreign exchange and regulatory compliance
- Blockchain operations and security audits
- On-chain liquidity design
Etherfuse will support asset tokenization and compliance infrastructure. Orca will help design the on-chain liquidity layer on Solana.
The initiative comes as South Korea prepares its regulatory framework for Security Token Offerings. This means financial institutions are testing the infrastructure before the legal market fully opens.
Why This Matters
Many people still associate Solana mainly with fast transactions, low fees, and meme coins.
Institutional investors are now examining a much larger use case: using Solana as financial infrastructure for real-world assets.
If traditional fund units can be issued, distributed, verified, and traded through blockchain networks, tokenization may reduce operational friction and connect financial products with global markets more efficiently.
However, this is not yet a commercial launch, and Shinhan is also exploring other blockchain networks. Solana has not been selected as its exclusive infrastructure.
Even so, Solana’s participation in an institutional trial of this scale is an important signal.
The blockchain competition is no longer only about which coin may rise in price.
It is increasingly about which network can support regulated funds, real assets, global liquidity, and institutional demand.
A new financial layer is being built.
And Solana is arriving at the right moment.
