If every country builds its own digital currency infrastructure, the next major battle may not be between Bitcoin and altcoins.
It may be between dollar stablecoins such as USDT and USDC, and China’s digital yuan, known as e-CNY.
DOLLAR STABLECOINS LEAD THE OPEN MARKET
As of October 2026, the global stablecoin market is worth around $300 billion.
USDT holds nearly 60% of the market. USDC holds about 25%. Together, they control around 85% of the global stablecoin market.
They are already widely used for:
- Crypto trading and DeFi
- Cross-border P2P payments
- Money transfers in emerging markets
- Payments and settlement across many blockchains
USDC had approximately $73.3 billion in circulation in the second quarter of 2026. Circle is also expanding into around 40 new markets.
The United States signed the GENIUS Act into law on July 18, 2025. It created the first federal framework for payment stablecoins. The law requires liquid reserves and regular public reporting.
This may help the U.S. dollar expand on blockchains without a retail U.S. central bank digital currency.
E-CNY IS STRONG INSIDE THE STATE SYSTEM
The e-CNY is not a private stablecoin. It is digital money supported by China’s central banking system.
According to the latest published figures, e-CNY has processed:
- More than 3.4 billion transactions
- Around 16.7 trillion yuan in cumulative transaction value
- Approximately $2.4 trillion at the exchange rate used when the data was reported
The 16.7 trillion yuan figure is transaction value. It is not the amount of e-CNY currently in circulation.
From January 1, 2026, eligible e-CNY balances began earning interest through the banking system. This gives e-CNY an advantage that U.S. payment stablecoin issuers are restricted from offering directly.
The mBridge cross-border payment platform has processed about $55.5 billion through more than 4,000 transactions.
According to data compiled by the Atlantic Council, e-CNY represents around 95% of the value processed through mBridge.
WHO HAS THE ADVANTAGE?
- Liquidity and blockchain access: Dollar stablecoins
- Crypto trading and private markets: Dollar stablecoins
- Official trade linked to China: e-CNY
- Government control and support: e-CNY
- Global access and open markets: Dollar stablecoins
- Interest on balances: e-CNY currently has a policy advantage
THE MOST LIKELY OUTCOME
There may not be one winner across the entire market.
Dollar stablecoins may remain the open liquidity layer for crypto, e-commerce and private international payments.
The e-CNY may grow inside trade routes linked to China, mBridge, energy, commodities and countries that want to reduce their dependence on dollar-based payment systems.
The United States has the world’s largest financial network.
China has enormous trade volume, manufacturing power and the ability to deploy national infrastructure at scale.
The real battle is not only about which digital currency is faster.
The winner will be the currency that enters more trade contracts, supply chains and payment systems during the next five to ten years.
Which side will gain more cross-border payment market share: dollar stablecoins or the digital yuan?
