Elon Musk has predicted that SpaceX could reach a value of more than $100 trillion within the next ten years.
This number sounds like science fiction. It is far larger than the current value of any company in the world. However, the long-term vision of SpaceX goes far beyond launching rockets for customers.
SpaceX has identified several possible future markets:
- Starlink internet and direct connection to mobile phones
- Starship transport for cargo and people
- Artificial intelligence data centers in space
- Energy systems on the Moon and Mars
- Manufacturing in space
- Mining resources from asteroids
One object often mentioned in discussions about the space economy is 16 Psyche.
A METAL WORLD IN SPACE
Psyche is a large asteroid located between Mars and Jupiter. Scientists believe it contains a mixture of rock and metal, including large amounts of iron and nickel.
Some popular estimates have placed its theoretical value at up to $10 quintillion if all its materials were priced at current Earth market rates.
But this is not real market value. It is only a theoretical calculation.
Psyche is not a mine. Its materials have not been extracted, transported or sold. The presence and quantity of valuable metals also remain subjects of scientific study.
NASA, NOT SPACEX, OPERATES THE PSYCHE MISSION
NASA launched the Psyche spacecraft on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket in October 2023. The spacecraft is expected to reach the asteroid in August 2029.
The mission is designed for scientific research. It will study Psyche’s surface, structure, gravity and magnetic properties.
There is no plan to mine the asteroid or bring its materials back to Earth.
SpaceX provided the launch rocket, but Psyche does not belong to SpaceX or Elon Musk.
WHY THE $10 QUINTILLION NUMBER CAN BE MISLEADING
Even if asteroid mining becomes possible, bringing a huge amount of metal back to Earth could sharply reduce metal prices.
A material is valuable partly because it is limited. If supply suddenly becomes much larger, its market price can fall.
The greater opportunity may not be bringing everything back to Earth.
Space resources could instead be used in space to build:
- Space stations
- Satellites
- Fuel storage systems
- Solar power facilities
- Lunar and Martian bases
- New spacecraft
This would reduce the need to launch every kilogram of material from Earth.
WHAT MUST SPACEX DELIVER FIRST?
A $100 trillion value cannot be built from a large prediction alone.
SpaceX must first prove that it can:
- Operate Starship safely and regularly
- Lower launch costs at a very large scale
- Expand Starlink into a global communication network
- Build profitable services beyond Earth
- Turn space manufacturing and resource use into real business
These goals require new technology, clear laws, large investment and many years of testing.
PSYCHE IS NOT IN ELON MUSK’S HANDS — YET
Psyche is not currently controlled by Elon Musk. SpaceX has not announced a specific plan to mine it.
The asteroid is better understood as a symbol of a possible future economy beyond Earth.
Today, it is a scientific destination.
Tomorrow, asteroids like Psyche may provide materials for building human infrastructure in space.
